Addressing items correctly

Items whose format and addresses meet the requirements of modern sorting machines will be processed more quickly. This saves time right after mailing the items in Switzerland.

An envelope is broken down into 4 areas:

  1. Franking area 74 x 38 m
    (to be kept blank for franking, postage paid impression and postal information)
  2. Sender area
  3. Do not write sender details outside the sender area
  4. Scanning area: the address field must be placed within this area
  5. Address field for address, address window or address label
  6. Coding area (to be kept blank)
    up to B5 format: coding area 140 x 15 mm,
    B5 to B4 format: coding area 100 x 35 mm

No stamps, labels or stickers may be affixed to the right of and below the address field.

We recommend that you write out the destination country in French or English on the last address line. The ISO country code need only be indicated on the waybill for URGENT items and parcels.

  • Where should the sender information be indicated (see examples 1 and 5)?
  • How are PRIORITY items marked (see examples 1, 2 and 3)?
  • Where should the destination country be indicated (see all examples)?
  • How should a letter be addressed if the destination country does not use the Latin alphabet (see example 4)? (For registered items, the recipient's details must be also be indicated using the Latin alphabet).
  • Where should a customer number be marked (see example 6)?
  • Where should the note "A remettre en main propre" (personal delivery) be affixed (see example 1 and 2)?
