Swiss Post seeks 750 apprentices for 2010

Press release dated 02.09.2009

In the coming year, Swiss Post is offering 750 new apprentices training positions. That is around 30 more than in the previous year. The number of apprentices at Swiss Post has increased steadily each year since 2004. It is expected that they will account for 4.7% of the headcount by 2010. Apprenticeships are offered in the areas of logistics, sales/communications, IT and maintenance. A total of 1,850 young people are currently being trained in twelve different courses. As one of Switzerland’s biggest employers, Swiss Post is doing its bit to offer young people a good start into their professional lives.

With an attractive, versatile range of apprenticeships, the company gives young people an opportunity to enter the working world. Whereas Swiss Post took on 480 apprentices in 2004, this year it has offered 720 young people a position and next year it will increase the figure to 750. Most of the apprenticeships are in the retail segment and logistics, followed by positions in the commercial field and IT.

Almost a full success rate

Throughout Switzerland, Swiss Post is currently training 1,850 apprentices in twelve courses in the fields of logistics, sales/communication, IT and maintenance. With 469 successful final examinations, the apprentices chalked up a success rate of 99%, on a par with last year's results. Twelve percent scored 5.3 or higher. These figures are well above the respective industry average.

Focus on employability

Swiss Post attaches great importance to the employability of young people. All apprentices are deployed in a number of different fields and learn how to work with customers, team members and line managers. This turns them into well-trained specialists who can work independently and skillfully with other colleagues, adopt a proactive approach to new challenges and negotiate competently on the labour market. All Swiss Post apprenticeships are recognized by the Federal Office for Professional Education and Technology (OPET).

Long-term interest

As a progressive employer with over 58,000 employees worldwide, Swiss Post has a long-term interest in well-trained future talents and highly qualified staff. Despite the decline in mail volume, it wants to continue offering a high-quality basic service at a reasonable price, even after the market deregulation planned by the Federal Council. Swiss Post is, therefore, seeking people who can provide the answers to tomorrow’s questions today, who are dedicated and who want to make a difference.
