Swiss Post completes solar power plant in Daillens

Swiss Post has finished constructing a photovoltaic installation on the roof of the Daillens parcel centre. With a panel surface area of over 8,000 square metres, the installation is one of the largest in western Switzerland. Beginning in December, it will generate enough electricity to power around 330 average households. The installation represents another milestone in Swiss Post’s sustainability policy.

Swiss Post has finished constructing another large photovoltaic installation. Situated on the roof of the Daillens parcel centre, the installation consists of 4,960 panels with a surface area of over 8,000 square metres, and will generate up to 1,200 megawatt hours of electricity each year. This is equivalent to the electricity consumption of around 330 Swiss households over the same period. The system saves 160 tonnes of CO2 a year in comparison to electricity from the Swiss sales mix. The plant is Swiss Post’s largest photovoltaic installation in western Switzerland. Smaller systems were put into operation in Yverdon-les-Bains in December 2012 and in Sion in September 2013. In German-speaking Switzerland, there are two larger systems at the Zurich Mülligen letter centre and the Frauenfeld parcel centre. Eleven other installations are either planned or under construction. On completion of all these projects, Swiss Post plans to feed around 7,600 megawatt hours of solar electricity into the grid each year by 2016.

Swiss Post’s commitment to climate protection

Since 2008, Swiss Post has covered all of its electricity requirements from renewable energy sources and, since 2012, all of its electricity has come from Switzerland. The electricity is produced mainly by Swiss hydro power, with a 5 percent contribution from wind, solar and biomass power plants in Switzerland. Swiss Post has a fleet of over 4,740 electric scooters and 156 biogas vehicles for delivering its letters and parcels, whilst PostBus runs hybrid and hydrogen-powered buses, demonstrating Swiss Post’s active role in protecting the climate. It has also offset the CO2 emissions of all its domestic addressed letter deliveries since 1 April 2012. Partly as a result of these efforts, Swiss Post is well on the way to surpassing its CO2 reduction target of 15,000 tons annually by the end of 2013.
