Swiss Post invests even more in wind and hydroelectric power

Swiss Post has made further improvements to the quality of its energy mix. Its entire demand for electricity is now covered by "naturemade basic" certified electricity, which comes entirely from domestic renewable sources. 5% of this mix consists of green electricity bearing the "naturemade star" ecolabel. This is of even better quality and produced in line with even more stringent requirements, promoting the development of solar, biomass and wind-energy facilities as well as ecological hydroelectric power.

Since 2008 Swiss Post has obtained all of its electricity from renewable energy sources; since 2012, entirely from Switzerland and as of 2013 "naturemade basic" certified green electricity. Of this mix, 5%, or 8.3 GWh, is of highest quality and bears the "naturemade star" ecolabel. This energy is produced by wind turbines on Mount Crosin in the canton of Jura and from various farms, small businesses and small ecological hydroelectric power stations throughout Switzerland. With this sustainable approach to the management of electricity, Swiss Post is a leader in Switzerland and makes a major contribution to the sustainable and clean supply of electricity. This is confirmed by the new WWF energy report, which investigates how major Swiss companies contribute to a sustainable future sourcing of energy ("Unter Strom – der Beitrag der grössten Schweizer Unternehmen zu einer nachhaltigen Stromzukunft") and recognizes Swiss Post’s pioneering role in this regard. In addition, Swiss Post plans to feed 7,500 MWh of clean power into the Swiss grid over the next few years, as it continues to fit its buildings with new photovoltaic systems. The first systems are already in operation in Zurich-Mülligen, Yverdon-les-Bains and Locarno.

Targeted support for the environment

Swiss Post has also set itself the target of achieving the highest possible level of energy efficiency in its goods and passenger transport using innovative and alternative drive technologies. Today, with 4,500 vehicles, Swiss Post has the biggest fleet of electric scooters of this kind in Europe. Part of the purchased eco-electricity is used directly for operating the fleet of electric scooters, which Swiss Post uses for deliveries, covering almost 15 million km every year without fossil fuels. Natural gas vehicles used in parcel deliveries are powered solely by biogas, while PostBus now has almost 20 hybrid buses in operation for public transport. These measures support Swiss Post’s goal of reducing its annual CO2 emissions by 15,000 tonnes by the end of 2013.

Carbon-neutral letter mail service in Switzerland

Since April 2012 the dispatching of all addressed letters in Switzerland is carbon-neutral. Swiss Post customers can also offset the remaining CO2 emissions that are incurred when letters are posted by paying a "pro clima" surcharge. All "pro clima" contributions are invested by Swiss Post in high-quality climate protection projects at home and abroad.
