Special stamp: Thomas Hirschhorn’s declaration of love for art
Swiss Post is dedicating a special stamp to this year's "Venice Biennale" international art exhibition. The Paris-based Swiss installation artist Thomas Hirschhorn has designed this stamp as a declaration of love for art, integrating his own artistic mission, which sees art as resistance. The special stamp is available immediately and valid without restriction.

The "Biennale" international art exhibition takes place every two years in Venice. Swiss Post had planned a stamp to mark the Biennale some time ago, as the Federal Office of Culture commissioned Thomas Hirschhorn to create Switzerland's contribution to the exhibition 2011. The artist accepted the additional challenge of designing a small area for once, alongside his usual large rooms.
His miniature work is a universal declaration of love for art. The statement "Art is Resistance" summarizes Hirschhorn's artistic position in a single sentence – an individual contribution which blends into the overall image of the stamp. In designing this stamp as a piece of torn cardboard, Hirschhorn drew inspiration from his earlier works: as an unknown artist in the 1980s, he wrote on cardboard signs and placed them in house doorways or under windscreen wipers.
