Via B Mail stamp to the World Gymnaestrada Lausanne
International, unifying, public-focused and colourful. These are the terms attributed to the 14th World Gymnaestrada which is taking place from 10-16 July in Lausanne. Swiss Post is issuing a special stamp in honour of this popular sporting event which will bring together 20,000 gymnasts from 55 nations. Graphic designer Dominique Rossier from Western Switzerland has captured the essence of the 14th Gymnaestrada in Lausanne with six silhouetted gymnasts on a coloured background. The main focus is not on individual self-expression but rather what the gymnasts can achieve and represent as a whole. The special stamp, with a face value of CHF 0.85, will be issued on 3 March.

Following previous Swiss appearances (1969 in Basel; 1982 in Zurich), the International Gymnastics Federation has awarded the four-yearly World Gymnaestrada to Switzerland for the third time. The world’s biggest gymnastics competition will attract some 20,000 gymnasts from around 55 countries to the heart of Lausanne. Gymnasts of all ages and from every continent will be taking part in the seven-day event. Whether male or female, handicapped or able-bodied, all will share in the excitement of this colourful production, which will reach its magical climax when all participants unite.
The group as a whole is also a key feature of the Gymnaestrada stamp, designed by Dominique Rossier from Puidoux. Five silhouetted gymnasts come together to create joint figures, while a lone dancer floats in the air. Flowing lines enclose the fiery-red background and emphasize the movement. Advance sales begin on 24 February. The stamp, with a face value of CHF 0.85, will be valid from 3 March until further notice.
