The Interlaken Ost transport hub has been awarded the “FLUX – Golden Transport Hub” prize. The award ceremony was held in Berne today as part of the Movimento – Forum for Mobility. The prize for exemplary transport hub design was awarded for the seventh time on this year’s theme of “Port towns”.

To qualify for the award, transport hubs had to have at least one shipping link. A jury of experts nominated five transport hubs from a selection of 39 for the FLUX prize: Romanshorn, Interlaken Ost, Flüelen, Rorschach and Wädenswil. What sets the five nominated cities apart is the compact layout of their connections and their targeted efforts towards becoming modern and frequently used transport hubs.

Popular interchange point for ships

The Interlaken Ost train station is the terminus for BLS trains and ships, the Zentralbahn and the Jungfrau railway lines. It is a popular interchange point for ships serving additional tourist destinations across Lake Brienz. Public transport, motorized private transport and slow traffic (pedestrians and cyclists) have been sharing the busy premises of Interlaken Ost train station for ten years. Although there are no clear regulations and traffic flows are not kept entirely separate, traffic runs smoothly even when the volume is high. The clear open-plan site layout offers visitors a high-quality user experience and makes them feel safe and secure.

Train station and port are located right next to each other: The northern exit leads to the pier and the southern exit leads to the station forecourt, with its excellent regional and local bus and PostBus connections. The transport hub distinguishes itself by consistently aiming to design attractive public transport services and optimize the transport chain.

“FLUX – Golden Transport Hub” for a seamless transport chain

“FLUX – Golden Transport Hub” is a national prize which is awarded every year. It highlights the significance of public transport with regard to sustainable mobility and the importance of a seamless transport chain between the different means of transport. The focus of the assessment is the connections between the different public transport companies. Additional aspects which are taken into account are the visual attractiveness of the transport hub as well as its appeal to tourists, the services offered, signposting, customer information and the quality of solutions for persons with restricted mobility.

PostBus Switzerland Ltd, the Public Transport Union (VöV) and the Swiss Association for Transport and Environment (ATE) are now the joint sponsors of the prize. The award ceremony took place in Berne today at noon as part of the Movimento Forum for Mobility. Urs Graf, Mayor of Interlaken, received the prize directly from Jury President and VöV Director Ueli Stückelberger.
