Swiss Post to implement digital health platform in south-east Switzerland

Swiss Post is continuing to expand its position in the Swiss healthcare sector. Swiss Post is implementing a platform for the comprehensive exchange of digital health and treatment data in the canton of Graubünden for the members of the eHealth Südost association. Swiss Post has been developing and running eHealth solutions for the electronic transfer of confidential healthcare information for some years now.

Swiss Post prevailed over its rivals in a WTO tender with its comprehensive range of services for a digital healthcare platform in the south-east Switzerland region. In addition to the electronic patient record system in accordance with the Federal Law on the Electronic Patient Record (EPDG), the service also includes typical B2B applications, such as referral and transfer, e-medication and e-prescription. The service package also includes the secure transfer of medical documents as well as B2C applications, such as e-vaccination records. The eHealth Südost association is also evaluating the option of a service center which could carry out core community functions for the association, such as the registration of patients, including instruction and training, archiving and data protection/data security tasks.

Based on the existing principles underlying Post E-Health, Swiss Post has now joined forces with partner companies, including informatica AG in Graubünden to design the healthcare platform for south-east Switzerland. The platform, which was initiated by the eHealth Südost association, will be available to all healthcare providers and patients in the region as a web portal. Medical specialists in the canton of Graubünden can use it to securely exchange their treatment data. It also gives them permanent access to information about a patient’s previous consultations and treatment as well as their laboratory results and medication. The move towards digitization will simplify procedures in the healthcare sector, and coordination will improve and become more efficient. This will also reduce the administrative workload, which ultimately saves on costs. The patients themselves benefit from a higher quality of care and additional safety in an emergency – but only if the patient in question explicitly wants this and has consented to the electronic patient record.

Post E-Health already up and running in several cantons

Swiss Post has spent many years working with leading technology partners to develop secure digital solutions for the modern healthcare sector. Several cantons (Geneva, Vaud, Ticino and Aargau) and institutions have already successfully implemented Swiss Post’s E-Health service. For example, the canton of Geneva has been running the “MonDossierMedical” service – a comprehensive electronic patient record system including a medication and care plan – in cooperation with Swiss Post since 2013. It is currently the only patient record system in Switzerland in operational use that meets all of the requirements set out in the Confederation’s eHealth strategy and complies with international standards.
