Swiss Post unveils new regional parcel center in Buchs (AG) after construction phase of just 15 months

Swiss Post recently opened its new regional parcel center in Buchs (AG) and presented it to the public today after a planning and construction phase of just 15 months. 175 employees in Buchs will now handle the sorting and delivery of parcels for the area covering greater Aarau, Lenzburg, Seetal, Suhrental and Wynental. It means that the company is now able to sort parcels in the region where they are to be delivered, and shortens transport routes. It brings Swiss Post a little closer to local households and makes parcel processing faster and more sustainable. After Rümlang, Buchs is the second regional parcel center that Swiss Post has put into operation in 2022. The company has invested around 15 million francs for the required conversion of a warehouse. Swiss Post can process up to 5,000 parcels an hour in Buchs.

Swiss Post has been sorting parcels in Buchs (AG) since mid-July. After a planning and construction phase of just 15 months, the belt conveyors at the new regional parcel center in Buchs are running smoothly. Today the company unveiled the center to the public. The new parcel center is located in a warehouse building that Swiss Post converted at a cost of around 15 million francs. Parcels that are posted and delivered in the area covering greater Aarau, Lenzburg, Seetal, Suhrental and Wynental no longer have to pass through large parcel centers such as Härkingen, Frauenfeld or Daillens. Johannes Cramer, Head of Logistics Services at Swiss Post: “We are delighted with the successful commissioning of the regional parcel center. It enables us to strengthen our roots in the region and continue to expand our capacity for sorting and delivering parcels.”

A spiral conveyor lifts parcels to a height of three metres

The new sorting machines in Buchs can process up to 5,000 parcels per hour. In a premiere for Switzerland, Swiss Post now sorts parcels at an elevated level to make optimum use of the available space. Two spiral conveyors save a lot of space. In just a few seconds, they raise the parcels up to the sorting machine at a height of almost three metres. “This technology is so far unique at Swiss Post”, says Johannes Cramer: “By investing in state-of-the-art technology like this, we can continue to meet the needs of our customers in the future. Because people's needs have changed. They want to order online today and find the goods in their mailbox tomorrow. So we have to be able to process growing numbers of parcels more and more quickly. This is only possible if we and our technology are innovative.”

Swiss Post is evolving and using synergies

Swiss Post is using its synergies in the region: in addition to the parcel sorting center, Buchs (AG) is also home to the delivery point for parcels. From here, our mail carriers spread out across the region every day. They were previously based in Härkingen and Mägenwil. Swiss Post has created 60 new jobs in Buchs. In total, the company employs 175 people at the new location. In addition, in 2023, it will move the Aarau letter delivery point – along with around 100 employees – to Buchs. Cantonal Councillor Dieter Egli, Director of Economic Affairs of the Canton of Aargau, welcomes Swiss Post's investment: “Swiss Post is an attractive employer in Aargau, employing almost 2,500 people from the region. I’m delighted with the new logistics center as it means they have committed to us as a business location.”

In recent years, Swiss Post has invested a total of around 250 million francs in the expansion of its sorting and delivery infrastructure. This helps the company ensure the provision of a high-quality universal postal service. It has opened regional parcel centers in Vétroz (VS), Cadenazzo (TI), Untervaz (GR) and Ostermundigen (BE). In addition to the Buchs parcel center, the new regional Rümlang parcel center was also added to the logistics network this spring. Two more locations for parcel sorting are expected to follow in 2023: a regional parcel center in Pratteln (BL) and a parcel department within the Härkingen (SO) letter center.
