Many logistics apprentices are currently facing major challenges, be it due to high parcel volumes or the absence of employees who belong to a risk group or have to look after their children. The apprentices in their final year do not know whether and how their final exams will take place. “This multiple burden is very noticeable and we are closely assisting the apprentices via Skype, e-mail or phone,” says Pirmin Schmid, Deputy Head of Vocational Training for German-speaking Switzerland. Given that some of his appointments have been cancelled, leaving him with free capacity, Pirmin decided to lend a hand. Within two days, it was all settled. Pirmin swapped his home office for a Fiat Panda and now delivers parcels in St. Erhard, where he lives. “I know my way around here, and I know many customers in person. The positive feedback is very gratifying,” summarizes Pirmin. He even let his children deliver parcels one day during a break from their schoolwork – at a distance, of course. “Customers are showing understanding for the fact that parcels may take a little longer to arrive than usual. It simply makes the pleasure all the greater when they do receive Easter or birthday presents.”
