Special stamp for Blatten: a symbol of solidarity
The “Solidarity for Blatten” special stamp supports the residents of the Lötschental valley community affected by the landslide. For this fundraising campaign, Swiss Post is working with the Swiss Red Cross.

On 28 May 2025, the Lötschental valley villages of Blatten and Ried in Valais were almost completely destroyed by a massive avalanche of rubble and ice. Many of the approximately 300 residents lost their homes – and their familiar way of life. Amidst these tragic events, Swiss Post is working together with its longstanding partner, the Swiss Red Cross (SRC), to send a message: the new “Solidarity for Blatten” special stamp combines regional identity with concrete help.
The stamp depicts Blatten’s church, nestled in the alpine landscape. The design is complemented by a quotation from Mayor Matthias Bellwald: “Ds Härz schlaat wiiter” (Our heart is still beating) – an expression of the resilience of the people affected. The stamp was designed by graphic artist Sara Meier from Brig-Glis – a conscious choice informed by her connection to the region devastated by the disaster.
By purchasing the special stamp, customers make a direct contribution to providing support locally: the selling price is 5 francs per stamp. Swiss Post will cover the postage costs of CHF 1.20 itself, so the purchase amount goes entirely to the Swiss Red Cross.
Support provided in several stages
The funds raised go to supporting the people of Blatten who lost their homes and possessions in the disaster. Where there are still financial gaps despite insurance or other forms of support, the SRC will provide assistance. The support is being provided in several stages: first with immediate aid for urgent expenses, then with bridging assistance, for example for alternative accommodation, and later for residual costs not covered elsewhere – i.e., not covered by insurance or other contributions or subsidies.
SRC employee Wim Nellestein is helping the Blatten community with the coordination of donations and other matters: “The huge solidarity shown means we will be able to support those affected in the coming years. Careful consideration of requests ensures that the aid goes where it is most needed.”
Donations that cannot be used for Blatten in the long term will go to the SRC’s emergency and disaster relief fund. They will benefit victims of future natural disasters in Switzerland.
The “Solidarity for Blatten” stamp is now available at all Swiss Post branches and online in the Postshop . Each stamp sold is a token of sympathy – and a small contribution that makes a big difference.
