“I mostly communicate electronically,” says a pupil in the 6th class from Unterentfelden in the canton of Aargau. In actual fact, studies show that children and young people barely write letters or read newspapers any more. That’s why SPICK NewsTarget not accessible, the new weekly paper for young people, was launched in spring 2019. The weekly paper SPICK News is intended for children aged between 10 and 15, with thirty 16-page issues published every year. It is possible to subscribe to SPICK News.

Promoting reading and writing

Swiss Post is keen to encourage children and young people to read and write and to stimulate their interest in current issues, events and world affairs. For this reason, it covers the delivery costs of the newspaper and supports SPICK News with the “Swiss post writing workshop” section. Pupils write a two-page spread on different themes chosen by their class. A SPICK News editor supports and accompanies the pupils in creating the text.

Green light in the letter center

The 6th-class pupils from Unterentfelden celebrated their successful efforts in the first issue of Spick News on 29 March 2019. In the “Swiss Post writing workshop” section, the pupils from Unterentfelden prepared a double-page spread on their visit to the Härkingen letter center, with the support of Alexander Volz, the Spick editor.

Interview with one of the pupils

What did you like most about the trip?
The food was very good, so thank you for that. ;-) It was fun to see the employees riding around on scooters and I thought it was fascinating to see how quickly the mail is sorted and how big the entire center is

Do you enjoy writing? Why?
I don’t write letters, because I mostly communicate electronically. Occasionally, I send a postcard via PostCard Creator. But that doesn’t really count as writing, because I use my mobile phone.

Do you read newspapers?
Yes, I usually read the papers lying around in the train when I’m travelling.

What do you like about Spick News?
It has lots of different articles about interesting topics.

What did you particularly enjoy about the editorial work?
My parents often told me about SPICK because they regularly read this magazine when they were children. It was cool to be able to contribute something to it as a class. Thank you for giving us this opportunity.
