“People smile because we’re dressed oddly”

There’s nothing yellow about Daniel Bucher and his car. Nevertheless, the Swiss Post IT specialist from Lucerne is currently out and about as a parcel carrier.

A magnetic “Swiss Post” sign on his car door is the only evidence that Daniel Bucher is no ordinary visitor. The 45-year-old from Lucerne usually heads a team of Swiss Post IT specialists. Now, he and his colleagues are spending one day a week delivering parcels in the Hochdorf region. “My car has never been this full before,” he says. He hasn’t counted, but “there are between 40 and 50 parcels on each delivery round.” Thanks to Swiss Post’s internal jobs site, Daniel Bucher and his team are devoting part of their working time to helping out their PostMail colleagues in Hochdorf. “Now that they also have larger parcels to deliver, they are reaching their capacity limits – so our team is lending a hand.” That is the main aim of the “jobs site” campaign: while some people are looking for assistance, others are offering to help. Daniel Bucher faces a particular challenge: “It’s difficult to load all the parcels in the right order whilst saving space – I have a lot of respect for my colleagues who work in delivery.” The customers are delighted, however: “We’re bringing them parcels instead of bills.” And many people smile to see him and his colleagues doing this unfamiliar job. “Because our cars aren’t yellow and because we’re dressed oddly – for mail carriers,” explains Daniel Bucher with a laugh.
