Take-off and a floral greeting – stamps that stir emotions during these difficult times

Stamps trigger emotions – and can even help people affected in times of crisis. The “COVID-19 Solidarity” stamp has shown this, helping Swiss Post to donate around 1.25 million francs to people in need in just a month. The second stamp issue of the year stirs further emotions, with a colourful bouquet of flowers in miniature format, a glimpse into hidden worlds and an air travel themed stamp despite the current restrictions. The new stamps will be available from Swiss Post branches and the online shop from 7 May 2020.

The stamp commemorating the 100th anniversary of the Swiss Florists’ Association, florist.ch, is being issued at just the right time: on one hand, the doors of the florist sector, badly shaken by the coronavirus pandemic, reopened just a few days ago. On the other, the stamp provides the opportunity to send a hand-written floral greeting by letter – at a time when lots of people have to stay at home and can no longer give flowers in person.

A glimpse into hidden worlds

The work of artist and molecular biologist Martin Oeggerli also concerns flowers. Using a scanning electron microscope, he explores unknown worlds, making details perceptible that are invisible to the human eye: tiny fleas, pollen or leaves. He transitions from biologist to artist: with painstaking precision, he colours the black-and-white original photographs down to the finest detail. Two of his works have now resulted in stamps. The A Mail stamp shows the surface of a rose petal, while the B Mail stamp depicts the tiny pollen of the forget-me-not.

“100 years Geneva Airport” stamp is ready for take-off

Another stamp is dedicated to Geneva Airport. With over 120 European and 28 intercontinental destinations, the airport is an important hub for the international city of Geneva and nearby France. Geneva Airport can look back on a proud 100-year history this year. Even though global air traffic is currently heavily restricted due to the pandemic, Geneva Airport is still celebrating its anniversary with this stamp, which will take off as planned on 7 May.

Vote now for the best EUROPA stamp

Like every year, PostEurop, the Association of European Public Postal Operators, is running a competition to find the best EUROPA stamp design on a particular theme. These stamps aim to promote cooperation in the postal sector. The theme for 2020 is ancient postal routes. On this occasion, Switzerland has teamed up with Germany to create the stamp. On one stamp each, the two countries depict a postal route from 1627 from Reinhausen in Germany to Milan and Mantua via Basel and Zurich. Voting on the best EUROPA stamp takes place from 9 May to 9 September 2020 at www.posteurop.org/europa2020

1.25 million Swiss francs already donated thanks to solidarity stamp

Exactly one month ago on 6 April 2020, Swiss Post launched the “COVID-19 Solidarity” stamp. Around 25,000 sheets of this stamp have been sold so far. This means Swiss Post can donate around 1.25 million Swiss francs to Swiss Solidarity and the Swiss Red Cross – to provide direct support for people in Switzerland who are now in need of help. The solidarity stamp can still be ordered as a sheet of 10 stamps for 50 francs at Swiss Post’s online shop or via the telephone number 0848 66 55 44.
