CUTISS has set itself the goal of providing patients who have major skin burns with safe, effective and accessible therapy options. After over 15 years of research, CUTISS is now able to manufacture personalized skin for entire body parts that can be grafted on to the burned areas. With a piece of skin the size of a postage stamp from the back of the ear, CUTISS can simulate the stem cells in such a way that they can replicate themselves, creating new skin. The challenge is that the skin grafts currently need to be transported at body temperature. The body needs to be able to grow into and with the skin, supply it with blood and to be able to sweat. The skin grafts also need to have the same skin colour.

So far, so good? Nearly. As there are millions of people around the world who suffer severe burns every year, Daniela and her team are currently working on a holistic solution, backed by a capital raising of 45 million Swiss francs. The solution will provide continental modularized production systems for personalized skin, through to logistics for operating theatres around the world. She talks about her successes, obstacles and limits in this edition of the InnoPodcast. She also has valuable tips for founders about how to attract investors and to cultivate the relationship with these important stakeholders.

After Daniela Marino completed her Master’s degree in biotechnology at the University of Milan with “cum laude” honours, she undertook her doctorate at the ETH Zurich. Since 2015, she and her team have been researching the “skin on demand” service. In 2017, she founded CUTISS. Just recently, CUTISS won the Top 100 Swiss Startup Award 2020, securing the first place in the Top 100 Biotech Startups for the third time in a row.
