Drone tests in Switzerland: airmail flying high

From Christian Wolf | 16.07.2015

Since last week, we have been testing the use of drones in collaboration with the Californian company Matternet. Our aim is to acquire experience with drone technology and to position ourselves at the very forefront of this development.

Swiss Post ensures reliable delivery irrespective of geographical circumstances. With the technological progress of the past 160 years, parcels can now be delivered even more quickly and reliably. We are already very flexible: we deliver consignments during off-peak times in the evening and on Saturdays. Thanks to parcel terminals, PickPost points and Pick@Home, we make it easier for you to receive and post parcels. Furthermore, we have introduced an online management solution for the reception of missed consignments.

We are now taking yet another step forward: since last week, we have been testing GPS-guided drones as a possible means of delivery in the future. The potential applications of these high-tech flying devices are manifold. Our tests focus on special applications and the transport of special items:

  1. If a location is cut off from the outside world because of heavy snow or a mudslide, drones could be used to transport urgently needed items there.
  2. People living in isolated areas who need regular medical deliveries could receive their items via drones.
  3. High-priority courier deliveries such as laboratory samples could also be transported by drones.

Through these tests, we want to help shape this new technology and to incorporate it into our delivery processes wherever it might prove useful. We hope that we will soon be able to say for certain how and when drones will be introduced in the future. One thing is already clear: we are standing on the cusp of an exciting new development.

Can you imagine drones being introduced in the coming years?
