Swiss Post as a driving force in the digitization of Switzerland

We communicate more and more digitally: sharing files in the cloud, providing digital signatures, transmitting confidential data to authorities or making a customer enquiry via chat: this is the new normal. Swiss Post sees itself as a driver for a modern, digitally secure and networked Switzerland. Firstly, by expanding its own competencies. And secondly, by enabling others to use new communication solutions such as e-voting, citizens’ portals or the digital letter box correctly.

For 175 years, Swiss Post has connected Switzerland and ensured the secure transportation of information, goods, people and money. This applies to both the physical and, increasingly, the digital world. Digitization has significantly changed communication habits: a person in Switzerland now receives an average of 200 letters per year, compared to 500 letters in the year 2000. At the same time, the number of digital messages has increased dramatically: each of us receives an average of 10,000 e-mails (excluding spam) per year. We also receive an average of 200 text messages and countless messages via WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, etc. So we’re not communicating less, but more and mostly via digital channels.

Simple and secure digital interactions between sender and receiver

Swiss Post doesn’t want to just stand by and watch these developments; instead it wants to help shape digital communication as a driving force for a modern, connected Switzerland. As part of Swiss Post’s growth strategy, the “Communication Services” unit was created in 2021 with the aim of driving forward Switzerland’s digital transformation. As of 1 January 2025, the unit will operate under the name Digital Services. With the new name, we’re highlighting that Swiss Post intends to play an active role in shaping the digital transformation. As Digital Services, the Group unit can also position itself more clearly on the market. It does so by enabling companies, public authorities, the healthcare sector and private individuals to exchange sensitive data securely. That’s why Digital Services is investing in digital solutions that are easy and intuitive to use.

Digital Services has set itself the goal of becoming the relevant provider of communication platforms for intuitive, confidential data exchange and secure data handling. The focus is always on the needs of our customers.

To achieve this goal, the unit focuses on three overarching areas: protected communication platforms for secure information exchange between senders and recipients; software solutions for the digital connectivity of SMEs and municipalities; and cybersecurity solutions for a protected digital environment in which senders and recipients can operate securely. To this end, Digital Services is developing targeted new business models for intuitive digital exchange and secure handling of data. These models will enable the public, companies, authorities, financial service providers and the healthcare system to navigate the digital future.

Communication platforms: solutions that offer added value

As a relevant provider of communication platforms for intuitive, trustworthy exchange and secure handling of data, ePost Service Ltd aims to simplify business administration and the home office for its customers. Thanks to the ePost App, Swiss Post’s digital letter box, private customers can manage their administrative tasks simply and securely in digital form. The ePost App is the node where digital correspondence between companies, authorities and their customers converges. The ePost App receives over 2.6 million hits a year.
With Unblu, Swiss Post has offered a platform for the secure exchange of confidential information in dialogue with customers since 2022. It consists of a range of digital products that enable the provision of personalized, flexible and efficient digital advice and support – via all communication channels.
SpotMe, which has also been part of the portfolio since 2023, offers a secure and comprehensive tool for communicating about, managing and organizing (large-scale) digital events, from registration to post-processing.

Advancing digitization in healthcare

As an integrated service provider for the electronic patient record (EPR) in Switzerland, Swiss Post offers protected access to sensitive health data, making a key contribution to digitization in the healthcare sector. Since autumn 2022, Swiss Post has been working with digital health specialist Post Sanela Health AG. Swiss Post also offers the ICT solution Time4Patient, an all-inclusive package for Swiss healthcare practices − thanks to innovative practice software and secure IT services from a single source.

Products for greater security in digital interactions

Data protection and data security are of the utmost importance for Digital Services. IncaMail, Swiss Post’s e-mail encryption service, makes it easy and secure to send sensitive messages and documents by e-mail. Tresorit empowers everyone, from companies to individuals, to take back control of their digital data using end-to-end encryption. As a secure alternative to Dropbox, Google Drive and OneDrive, Tresorit offers a solution for sharing, managing and controlling data within and outside the organization. SwissSign offers solutions that ensure secure and simple data handling, such as electronic signatures and certificates as well as identity solutions such as SwissID. Over 4.5 million customers already use SwissID to log in easily and securely to use the online services of Swiss Post and many other companies and authorities.

Software solutions: connect instead of manage

The digitalization specialists Dialog and the Diartis Group in German-speaking Switzerland and Groupe T2i in Western Switzerland offer secure software and cloud solutions and make cities and municipalities fit for the digital future. The Diartis Group in Lenzburg, comprising Diartis AG and Diartis Solutions AG, develops and distributes software solutions for case management.

E-voting is also one of Swiss Post’s services for a digital society. Swiss Post’s new e-voting system was used for the first time in June 2023. In the same year, e-voting with full verifiability was possible for the first time in Switzerland for the National Council and Council of States elections. E-voting with the Swiss Post system will be possible in the cantons of Basel Stadt, Graubünden, St. Gallen and Thurgau in July 2024. The cantons of Geneva and Lucerne will follow in 2026. We will continue to strengthen our range of public services.

Cybersecurity solutions: information security at the forefront

Secure communication can only take place if the sender, recipient and communication channels are protected and efficiently designed. The acquisition of terreActive AG (2023) and Hacknowledge (2022) will also enable Swiss Post to offer its business customers comprehensive cyber security solutions. With the merger of terreActive and Hacknowledge to form “Swiss Post Cybersecurity Ltd”, Swiss Post is laying the foundations for the development of a strong Swiss cybersecurity provider. Swiss Post Cybersecurity Ltd offers pragmatic, effective and secure cybersecurity solutions for organizations, protecting digital, confidential data even better.

The investment in Open Systems further complements the existing offer: thanks to a unique service concept and its own platform, the cybersecurity specialist safeguards the data transfer and networks of global companies and NGOs, and organizes them efficiently.
