Roche “pRED” research center, Basel

Roche is currently undertaking a large-scale construction project in Basel – the building of a new research center at its Group headquarters. The planned new development is an architectural complex made up of four main buildings.

The greatest challenge involved in this large-scale project is working in a densely-populated residential area under tight spatial constraints. Requirements on noise and CO₂ reduction must also be fulfilled during the construction process. As a result, highly sophisticated logistics planning was required.

To overcome the spatial constraints, Swiss Post set up an external construction logistics hub – a consolidation warehouse – in Pratteln. Goods from various suppliers are delivered to this site, where they are stored temporarily and assembled as prefabricated modules if required. From Pratteln, the materials are transported to the construction site in Basel in good time using e-trucks. This reduces direct journeys to the site by up to 60 percent.

Deliveries are registered by suppliers in logistics software, enabling goods to be delivered “just-in-time” to the part of the site where they are needed. Swiss Post is also responsible for the vertical and horizontal transfer of materials on the site and for ensuring professional waste disposal.
