Postal Delivered Duty Paid (PDDP)
Pay the import duties for your recipients
How PDDP works
Shipping to the USA
-
Before shipping
PDDP is available for shipping goods with a value of up to and including USD 800.00. This service is now obligatory due to new US customs regulations and can be used for PostPac International and International small goods. Consignments with a higher goods value can only be sent by post using the standard procedure (DAP). If you would like to use PDDP, all you need is a billing relationship. When creating the shipping documents, select the option “I pay the costs” in the drop-down menu under “Customs duties, VAT and charges paid: (PDDP)”.
Registration is not required for this service.
-
Completing the shipping documents
- Use the “Accompanying documents for international small goods” or “Create waybill (on account)” online services as usual.
- Please describe the goods as precisely as possible. E.g. “T-shirt, male, 100% cotton” instead of “clothing”.
- Declare your contents using the customs tariff number from the Harmonized Tariff Schedule.
- Describe your items as precisely as possible. Generic terms such as “gifts” are not permitted and prevent your consignments from being processed as part of PDDP.
- Provide the correct goods value in USD. For sales merchandise, the selling price; for samples, gifts and repairs, the purchase value. A value such as USD 0.00 or USD 1.00 is not plausible from a customs perspective.
- Indicate the country of production as the country of origin.
- Please note the US import regulations, in particular for prohibited or regulated goods. (e.g. tobacco products (including cigars) and alcoholic beverages are not permitted with PDDP)
- Prior notification to the FDA is required for food, for example.
-
After delivery
We will settle the costs incurred in connection with customs clearance on your usual monthly invoice. More information can be found under “Price”.
Please note
With PDDP, you can declare up to five article items. A maximum of 999 of each item is possible. If you would like to send more, we would be happy to check suitable shipping options with you. To do so, please contact our customer advisor.

How our invoicing works
We will invoice you the costs for the customs costs, which are passed on to us by the partner postal company. Invoicing is carried out once a month, around two to three months after shipment. For our service, we charge a fee of 10 francs per consignment and 2 percent of the amount set aside for customs.

Important information
With PDDP, Swiss Post enables consignments containing goods worth up to and including USD 800 to be sent to the USA in compliance with customs regulations. PDDP ensures that import levies are already paid upon import into the USA, thereby complying with the new US customs regulations.
Please note: “Sample” and “Gift” are not permitted as goods declarations. Please describe the contents in detail in each case.
Post your PostPac International or international small goods with PDDP as usual, ideally at a self-operated Swiss Post branch or Swiss Post business customer points. It is important that staff carry out an acceptance scan on site to ensure that the necessary data transfer is triggered.
To use PDDP, you need a billing relationship with Swiss Post. This allows us to pre-finance the customs and VAT costs and the PDDP fees for you and charge you for them later in your monthly invoice. If you do not yet have a billing relationship, you can register here as a business customer.
Currently, PDDP is only available for consignments to Germany and the USA. When you enter your data, the system automatically checks whether PDDP is available. If it is, the option will appear directly in your online service.
Use the “Create waybill (on account)” or “Accompanying documents for international small goods” online services as usual.
Example from “Create waybill (on account)”
Example from “Accompanying documents for international small goods”
When sending small goods, you require “Letters dispatch lists – send advance notice of letter mail” access. You can find this in the access settings in the Swiss Post Customer Login. If you have any questions, please contact your superadministrator.
The “WebStamp” online service does not offer the PDDP option.
A customs tariff number of at least six digits is required for international goods shipments. The first six digits of the Swiss customs tariff number correspond to the international standard (HS code). This makes it sufficient for international consignments. The more precisely you enter the customs tariff number, the lower the risk of queries from customs – and also of delays in shipping. Detailed information can be found on the website of the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (FOCBS) or in the Swiss utility tariff (Tares - Customs tariff information).
Important: For shipments to the USA, it is recommended to use the customs tariff number in accordance with the US Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS).
The PDDP cycle using the example of an e-commerce shipment to the USA
- Individual pricing. You decide whether customs duties and fees are included in the price.
- Online shop order. Customers abroad order from your online shop.
- Shipment begins. You record the shipping documents online with us, select “PDDP assumption of costs” and hand over the consignment to Swiss Post; postage will be invoiced separately.
- Transport. We organize transport to the USA.
- Transfer of data. We forward your goods declaration to our partner, who determines the customs clearance.
- Registration and advance payment. Our partner registers your goods with CBP and makes the advance payment required for customs, which is invoiced to Swiss Post.
- Delivery to end customers. The foreign postal organization delivers the parcel.
- Monthly billing with business customers. Swiss Post charges all PDDP costs collectively in your monthly invoice.
