Security given top priority
Cutting-edge technology guarantees maximum security
Security is a top priority for e-voting. In the system’s most advanced phase of development, the votes cast will also be individually and universally verifiable. This means that both voters and electoral authorities can check at all times that the votes cast have been correctly registered and have not been manipulated. Voters can already individually verify their votes.
With an electronic voting process, voting and election secrecy must also be guaranteed at all times. On its e-voting platform, Swiss Post employs cutting-edge signing, encryption and verification technology for voting and election information. Its solution is currently the only productive solution in Switzerland to use seamless end-to-end encryption. These measures guarantee that votes cannot be falsified and data cannot be manipulated. This applies to the entire process, from data registration to storage in an encrypted digital ballot box to the decryption and counting procedure. In the near future, votes will also be universally verifiable. This means that both voters and electoral authorities can check at any time that the votes cast have been correctly registered and have not been manipulated. It is therefore impossible to trace the votes cast back to the voters. The integrity of the ballot box is controlled by means of a verifiable cryptographic protocol (El-Gamal), a purely mathematical process that prevents any information from being traced back to individuals. Only encrypted votes are saved on the server; no information concerning who cast these votes is saved.
