Compulsory health insurance in accordance with the Health Insurance Act (HIA) includes doctor’s visits, outpatient treatment, medication in accordance with the list of specialities and hospital stays in the general department of a listed hospital in the canton of residence. It also covers services for prevention, maternity and certain therapies.

Supplementary insurance is subject to the Insurance Policies Act (IPA) and is voluntary. It can supplement services that are not provided for in the HIA, such as dental treatment, alternative medicine, hospital stays in the private or semi-private department and extended coverage abroad. The type of supplementary insurance that makes sense for you depends on your individual needs.

Basic insurance only covers services required for medical purposes that are effective, appropriate and economical.

Before the costs are covered, the deductible applies: an annual fixed amount that insured persons must bear themselves.

The minimum deductible for adults is 300 francs, and higher optional deductibles of up to 2,500 francs are possible. Once the deductible has been reached, a retention fee of 10 percent of the additional costs is due, up to a maximum of 700 francs per year for adults and 350 francs for children.

Abroad, basic insurance covers a maximum of twice the amount of the costs that would be incurred in Switzerland. Supplementary insurance can close gaps in coverage and, for example, cover return transport.

Basic insurance can be cancelled until 30 November, so that you can switch as of 1 January. For supplementary insurance, the notice periods set out in the relevant General Terms and Conditions of Insurance apply, usually three months before the end of the year.

In the event of pregnancy and childbirth, the basic insurance covers the costs of preventive care, ultrasound, hospital or birthing costs, midwifery services and postpartum care. No cost contribution is required for maternity benefits.

To save on premiums, policyholders can opt for a higher deductible, take out an alternative insurance model or apply for a cantonal premium reduction.
