125 years Alberto Giacometti
His figures are little more than lines – and yet they are full of life: to mark the 125th anniversary of Alberto Giacometti, his famous Walking Man I is now hiking across a Swiss stamp.
Rich Content Section
With his elongated bronze figures, Alberto Giacometti has created a style that is instantly recognizable. From Val Bregaglia to Paris and back again, between Alpine silence and the avant-garde energy of the city, he tirelessly searched for the “right” form of man. He was often so self-critical that he destroyed works that he thought were “not finished.” His Walking Man I is now regarded as a symbol of modern humankind: fragile, determined and always in motion. The character, who has already featured on a Swiss banknote, now finds its place on a stamp. This comes in a narrow, special format that captures the elegance and reduction of Giacometti's elongated sculptures. A fitting gift to mark the 125th anniversary of an artist who has made a lasting impression on the world with art that is radically simple.

Anniversary exhibition
125 Jahre Alberto Giacometti: Die Geister der Materie
Curator Carolin A. Geist has taken Alberto Giacometti’s 125th birthday as an opportunity to plan a volume of essays, a children’s book and an anniversary exhibition − which will be held as near as possible to Stampa, in order to “bring Alberto home”. A retrospective of original works will be displayed in dialogue with contemporary artists. The exhibition will focus on the materiality of his works and on Bregaglia: a narrow, rugged valley that produced Alberto, a world-renowned sculptor and one of Switzerland’s most important artists. For Giacometti, Bregaglia was the subject of his work, his place of inspiration and the source of his creativity.
