175 years Lehrmittelverlag Zürich
School books for everyone: Lehrmittelverlag Zürich (LMVZ) was founded 175 years ago because the teachers in the canton wanted top-quality, standardized teaching materials.
Rich Content Section
In 2026, Lehrmittelverlag Zürich (LMVZ) is looking back on 175 years of history under the slogan “We celebrate learning!”. LMVZ was founded in 1851 by Alfred Escher, then Head of the Department of Education. The goal was to develop standardized, politically neutral and high-quality teaching materials. They were also intended to be affordable to encourage equal opportunities. From the outset, it was agreed that the canton and teachers would work together to develop the textbooks. Following the restructuring of the educational authority in 1998, LMVZ was reorganized as a largely autonomous entity within the Department of Education. Today, it is one of Switzerland’s leading educational publishing houses and has received numerous international awards for its top-quality, innovative teaching materials.
