550 years Battles of Grandson and Murten

The stamp marking the 550th anniversary of the Battles of Grandson and Murten commemorates two events that changed the balance of power in Europe in 1476 and shaped the Swiss Confederation.

Rich Content Section

The Battles of Grandson and Murten in 1476 marked a historic turning point. What began as a conflict between Swiss troops and the Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold, would have far-reaching consequences for the whole of Europe.

At Grandson, the Burgundy army lost its camp, its artillery and immense wealth – a strategic and symbolic setback. A few months later, the defeat at Murten determined the final military outcome. Despite superior numbers, Karl the Bold’s military force succumbed to the resistance of the Swiss.

These events went on to strengthen their position in the long term and accelerated the collapse of Burgundy. The stamp captures this historic turning point in visual form and combines illustrations from different eras. It condenses memory, identity and European history into a compact visual timeframe.
