2020 UCI Road World Championships Aigle-Martigny
The UCI Road World Championships were due to be held in the Aigle-Martigny region from 20 to 27 September 2020. It was the first time the event was planned in French-speaking Switzerland. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, however, the Road World Championships in Switzerland have been cancelled.
The World Championships were organized at short notice after plans to hold the event in Vicenza in Italy were abandoned. However, the organizers pulled out all the stops to deliver an outstanding event. This was all the more important, as Aigle, home to the UCI headquarters, is seen as the home of world cycling. The town was also planned to be the starting point for the road race. The route would then have continued to Sion and, from there, back to Martigny, where the Col de la Petite Forclaz, the pinnacle of the course, would have awaited the riders. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, however, this year’s Road World Championships in Switzerland will not go ahead as planned.
The image on the illustrative special stamp is only peripherally inspired by this route. The stamp focuses primarily on the rural depiction of the two regions, with the vineyards of Vaud on Lake Geneva and the mountains of Valais. Lavaux appears golden to reflect the autumn season. A cyclist from the Swiss national team can be seen in the foreground, while the peloton can be seen chasing hard in the background.
