Stamp Day 2022 – Burgdorf

From 24 to 26 November, the town of Burgdorf will host Stamp Day, known as BUBRA’22. At the same time, Burgdorf’s philatelists will be celebrating their centenary. Reason enough for some encounters between old and new, between the historical and the present.

Rich Content Section

Issued in honour of the stamp exhibition, the miniature sheet shows the colours of the Emmental municipality, yellow, black and white, surrounding a line drawing of the town from a bird’s eye view. The drawing is deliberately meant to look “old”, but is in fact based on recent drone footage, so the stamp represents a successful combination of old and new. This idea will be continued during the exhibition: a drone will carry an old mail bag from the exhibition site to a Swiss Post branch – again, a connection between different eras.

Airmail has a long tradition in the Emmental hub of Burgdorf: the first flight from Burgdorf to Bern took place on 30 March 1913. To enable the flight, the “Gsteig” was converted into a runway. On the day of the flight, aviation pioneer Oskar Bider transported franked cards and letters from Burgdorf to Bern in his plane, from where they were distributed throughout Switzerland.
