Press release dated 05.11.2004
Int. Year of Sport and Physical Education 2005

Shortly after the official launch of the Year for Sport and Physical Education, an artistic ambassador is drawing attention to the concerns of the international community: a stamp issued jointly by the United Nations, the International Olympic Committee and Swiss Post will soon draw the attention of hundreds of thousands of people worldwide to this topic - a premiere.

For this purpose three organizations - the United Nations in Geneva, the International Olympic Committee, based in Lausanne, and Swiss Post - are, for the first time in their history, issuing a joint stamp.

The stamp highlights the dynamism of sport and its bridge-building function. A number of athletic poses are combined into a harmonious whole that in turn inspires the viewer to take up a sporting activity.

The stamp was designed by Swiss graphic artist Roland Hirter who also created the logo for the International Year for Sport and Physical Education.

The new stamp bears the names "Nations Unies" and "Comité International Olympique" in addition to the "Helvetia" name, which is obligatory for Switzerland.

The special stamp marking the "International Year for Sport and Physical Education 2005" will appear on 23 November 2004.

The stamp can be ordered on the Internet at It has a face value of 1.80 Swiss francs.

The special stamp is also available at all Swiss post offices and philatelic salespoints, at the United Nations post office in Geneva and at the Olympic Museum in Lausanne.
