To protect the climate, we conserve resources and reduce CO₂ emissions from vehicles, products, services and processes. Our sustainable logistics has a positive impact on our environmental footprint – and also on that of our customers.

We’re acting now for tomorrow

Since the end of August, we’ve been delivering all letters and parcels in the canton of Basel-Stadt and in Basel city with Swiss Post’s own electric vehicles. Basel is the fourth city to have deliveries purely with electric vehicles, following Zurich, Bern and Geneva. And by 2030, we will gradually implement delivery of all letters and parcels by electric vehicles throughout Switzerland. We have the largest fleet of electric vehicles in Switzerland to achieve this. In the meantime, we are using around 6,000 three-wheel scooters and over 1,000 electric delivery vans for deliveries.

With targeted measures and new technologies, we are reducing our CO₂ emissions in order to be carbon neutral in our own operations by 2030.

CO<sub>2</sub>-free delivery by Swiss Post: IKEA case study

With over 7,000 electric vehicles, we operate the largest electric fleet in Switzerland. It currently comprises around 5,950 electric three-wheel delivery vehicles, over 1,000 electric four-wheel delivery vehicles and around 600 other electric vehicles. By 2030, all 10,500 delivery vehicles will be switched to alternative drive systems.
This enables us to deliver around 55.4 million parcels and 1.5 billion letters with no CO₂ emissions every year. In Bern, Zurich and Geneva alone, our e-vehicles serve almost 1.5 million households.
By the end of 2025, we will also deliver all letters and parcels using Swiss Post’s own electric vehicles in Basel, Biel/Bienne, Köniz, Lucerne, Lugano, Uster and Winterthur. By the end of 2030, we will deliver throughout Switzerland using electric vehicles.
From 2030, 20 percent of the kilometres travelled by Swiss Post’s own vehicles and 5 percent of those travelled by transport partners will be powered by alternative drive systems.

How we’re conserving resources

Swiss Post is implementing measures in many areas to reach its climate and energy targets, including goods logistics, processing, internal transport and packaging.

An electric four-wheeler saves six tonnes of CO₂ annually compared to a fossil fuel vehicle. An electric scooter requires around six times less energy than a petrol scooter. In 2009, we started to replace our scooters with electric three-wheelers. Since 2017, only electric three-wheelers have been on the road for Swiss Post. By delivering with electric vehicles in Zurich, Bern, Basel and Geneva, we are saving around 2,483 tonnes of CO₂ each year, which is equivalent to travelling 310 times around the Earth by car. We will continue to reduce CO₂ emissions by replacing fossil-fuel powered vehicles with electric vehicles.

We produce and purchase sustainable energy to meet our needs.

Since 2022, all self-operated branches have operated with 100 percent “naturemade star”-certified eco-electricity. Our My Post 24 terminals are also fully operated with eco-electricity.
Our processing centers are equipped with energy-saving LED lighting. Because our outside lighting is operated with smart controls, we save on energy and help reduce light pollution.
The solar panels on the roofs of our processing centers supply a total of 10.9 gigawatts of electricity per year. This is equivalent to the annual electricity usage of roughly 5,000 households.
Unused green spaces around our processing centers provide valuable living space for plant and insect life. What’s more, the roof of the Zurich-Mülligen letter center is also home to a bee colony.

Roughly 50 percent of all letters and parcels handled by Swiss Post currently travel at least some of their distance by rail. Due to the environmental benefits that rail transport offers, we are increasing its use considerably: as of the end of 2023, we are using 84 train connections to transport our consignments. Thanks to seven new connections introduced in autumn 2023, we can transport nine million more consignments by rail instead of road and save almost 1.3 million kilometres of road transport in the process. This will help us save around 1,000 tonnes of CO₂ each year and is a big step towards reaching Swiss Post’s climate and energy target.

We are promoting the switch to alternative drive systems in the trucks used for transportation by our subsidiaries and transport companies. Currently, Swiss Post has one truck with an electric drive system. Our subsidiaries have a total of 12 biodiesel trucks (Stella Brandenberger), one truck with a hydrogen drive system and two trucks with electric drive systems (Bächle Logistics). From 2030, 20 percent of the kilometres travelled by Swiss Post Goods Logistics will be powered by alternative drive systems. By 2040, we also want to operate a completely carbon-neutral supply chain.
