As long as they don’t make postal transport more difficult, newspapers can be stuffed with inserts of a wide variety of types, formats and sizes. A distinction is made between the newspaper’s own supplements and third-party inserts:

• Supplements are inserted by the newspaper publisher itself and are often provided as free additional material.
• Third-party inserts are inserts from companies other than the publisher which usually have a clear advertising or sales purpose.

The conditions for this are agreed between Swiss Post and the relevant publisher. Third-party inserts may never be heavier than the newspaper itself, but this restriction does not apply to the publisher’s own supplements.
