For political municipalities and cantons: with the “Election and voting consignment” product, Swiss Post offers a specially developed mailing option for shipping election and voting documents.

The familiar A Mail and B Mail shipping options are also available.

The “Election and voting consignment” product supplements these options as a solution specifically targeted for the processing and mailing of election and voting documents.

The shipping costs for election and referendum consignments correspond to the valid prices for B Mail bulk mailing.

All B Mail bulk mailing price changes also automatically apply for this product.

Format requirements

Consignments may be maximum B5 format (250 x 176 mm) with a thickness no greater than 20 mm.

Larger and thicker consignments will be delivered as A Mail, B Mail or B Mail bulk mailings.

Important information

To use the “Election and voting consignment” product, you must meet the following requirements:

The sender is a political municipality or a canton and has a billing relationship with Swiss Post
You must use a certified two-way envelope
The data matrix codes must be printed on the voting card
The consignment must have a postage paid impression
You must send consignments within Switzerland

The range of services does not apply when sending election and voting documents to Swiss citizens living abroad. Use the international document mailing service instead.

Use a certified two-way envelope. The “Election and voting consignment” factsheet tells you what you need to know about the layout of the certified two-way envelope and the corresponding voting card. You cannot use the “Election and voting consignment” product if the two-way envelope or the voting card do not comply with Swiss Post’s specifications and design guidelines.

We recommend that you obtain a free final proof before producing any consignments. This ensures that your consignments can be processed correctly and arrive on time.

Business reply label

As a public authority, would you like to pay the postage for postal voting on behalf of your voters? Then you can use the business reply label (GAS) service. To do so, you will need a custom GAS data matrix code. This is generated by Swiss Post. Please contact your customer advisor.

Posting and delivery

Delivery times differ depending on whether the event is a federal election and voting date, a cantonal/municipal election and voting date or a by-election.

You must post election and referendum consignments using a dispatch list/delivery note created online. You can mail your consignments at any Swiss Post branch or at any Swiss Post letter and logistics center. We will also collect your consignments directly from you on request.

You can post the election and voting documents from Monday to Friday in the week before the legal deadline for delivery (posting week). We will deliver your consignments the following week from Monday to Saturday (delivery week).

Public holidays

Is the Friday of the posting week a public holiday? Post your consignment no later than Thursday.
Is the Friday of the delivery week a public holiday? We will deliver your consignment by Saturday at the latest.

You can declare your consignment as an “election and voting consignment” when you send it, but the delivery times for B Mail bulk mailings apply. Please note the relevant deadlines by which election and voting documents must reach voters in your canton. Coordinate the posting day based on the delivery times for B Mail bulk mailings to ensure that your documents arrive on time.
